“High blood pressure, high fasting blood sugar levels, and overweight/obesity are the top three risk factors for mortality in the Americas”. At household level, 28% of indigenous and 14% of non-indigenous households have a mother who suffers from overweight or obesity, and a child under 5 years of age with stunting. This situation is related to the rapidly increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity in Guatemala during the past few years, particularly in rural and indigenous population groups, which adds to the still high prevalence of stunting. At national level, one out of two women in reproductive age suffers from overweight and obesity, and one out of two children suffers from stunting. Guatemala experiences the highest prevalence of the double burden of malnutrition in the Western Hemisphere.
